New Dr. Who - 'Rose'

I'll stay off any real spoilerific stuff but if you wish to remain totally pure ahead of the (probable) 26th March start date then stop reading now.

I liked it - it was certainly an updated Doctor but not in the horrific sense of the Paul McGann version (not that PM was horrific - he was one of the very very few good points). The leather jacket and the accent ("Lots of planets have a North" heh) are going to take some getting used to but he's certainly got the weird down. Not quite otherworldly enough though yet.

Shock horror, I liked Billie. I'm always surprised when I do but she's actually rather a decent actress, I just have to wipe the teen sensation singer/wife/ex of Chris Evans part out of my head.

Possessed wheelie bins! (This was when my mother decided to go to bed).

Genuinely creepy moments down in the basement.

Theme tune not too mucked about.

The TARDIS is back, baby!

The BBC still can't afford convincing big SFX.

The last thirteen minutes could do with some tweaking before it airs.

The London Eye (although the Dome would have been an even better joke). And you know, for a series supposedly mostly filmed in Swansea (or was it Cardiff?) they seem to have set it up in such a way that a fair amount of filming had to have been done in London. Either that or I'm wrong about the lack of convincing SFX.

The incidental music sucks. It's bland and totally non-Who. Get rid of it.

Still not over the leather jacket.

I've always liked Billie Piper - that modern Canterbury Tales thing she did was brilliant, as was the thing about the children's home where she convincingly played a teenager and a thirty-something. I'll watch something if I know she's in it, regardless of what it is.

Possessed wheelie bins - yep, it's Dr Who :)

I thought the premise was good. Eccleston will take a while to settle down but that's the nature of the role and he shows promise. Piper was pretty good - I actually really liked her. The boyfriend and the mother were awful, so let's hope we don't see any more of them!

What needs some work is the dialogue - in some parts it sounded downright stilted - and the direction. Perhaps this is what is going to change prior to the final version.

All in all though, I'm pretty impressed. And ropy-FX is what Dr Who is all about so I was pleased to see that they kept up the tradition!
